2022 Villa d'Este

Story and images by Rob Alen

If a setting makes a Concours, then Villa d'Este is pretty much at the top.

The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este goes back to 1929. The villa was built on the shore of Lake Como in northern Italy in 1568 as the summer residence for Cardinale Tolomeo Gillio. In the 1873 it became a hotel catering to the world's elite. This year they celebrate their 150th season. Reality is there are only about 50 cars, albeit some the of world's best, in a relatively small space before a select attendance. And given the recent health circumstances, this year was at full speed.

A parallel event has been organized, FuoriConcorso, by Guglielmo Miani, a Milan businessman who has Larusmiani, an elegant men's store in Milan's fashion quarter. He has ambitions of creating a Como Car Week.

2022 New York Auto Show

Story and images by Rob Alen

The New York Auto Show returned to Jacob Javits Center for the first time since 2019.

The frenzy for electric vehicles continues. Submitting to political pressures armed with government subsidies, EVs were all of the talk. Seventeen EV models were on the exhibit floor. But no mention or any sense of environmental consciousness. On the other hand, every manufacturer is in motorsports. Subaru, long popular with outdoor types monopolized their association with the U.S. National Park System with a spectacular display worthy of Disneyland to introduce the 2023 Solterra all-electric SUV; but enter Javits Center from the 11th Avenue entrance and you are blasted with the new WRX and its rally and motorsports successes. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday is not dead.

Noticeable in New York is the continuing OEM Auto Show absenteeism: no BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Mazda, Porsche, Cadillac, Honda or Acura, and all of the major EV nameplates except for the new-guy, Vinfast from Vietnam. They have had a switch in strategy (from BMW power) to "all in" for electric, which was the show's buzz phrase. Millennials are the Charging Generation comfortable with charging their phones, and so will adapt to charging their cars. But you can bet New York's ConEdison is ready and relishing raising off-peak rates as EVs are forced into the market. Batteries store energy, which has to come from power generating plants. It was nice to return to New York, the outstanding museums, hotels, restaurants, shows and music. And it was perfect Springtime weather.
