Publisher's Note: The Automotive Fine Arts Society (AFAS) holds its annual group show during the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance held each August near Carmel, California, USA. A range of Guest Artist invitations are extended to successful applicants for the purpose of potential membership in the Society. A member's meeting is conducted the day after the show in which members have an opportunity to discuss the work of the Guest Artists and vote on acceptance into the Society as an Associate Member, which is the first step. Six new Associate members were accepted in the August 2018 meeting. We are presenting brief profiles on each in coming issues...

Toshiharu Inagaki

Note: What you are looking at are not "paintings" but rather layers and layers of finely cut paper that result in an uncanny three-dimensional work of art. Inagaki's English is limited so we have tried to present his comments as closely as possible to his original intent.

Toshiharu Inagaki was born in Nagoya, Japan in 1953. He says "I've loved cars since I was young child." Inagaki has worked at the Toyota Auto Body Design Department to the present time.

He says he was seeking a unique mode of expression without

the use of paints. He tried many alternatives and over time the trials and errors piled up. "I paid close attention to all my modes of expression and after much rejections, I landed on "paper cutout" art, which is expressed with nothing more than knife and paper. I pursued this mode independently without fixating on the techniques of times passed. Having focused on the shadows created by the cutting and layering of the paper and the changes caused by moisture, I arrived at a world somewhere between 2D and 3D."

"Day by day I accumulated the skills that allowed me to manipulate the angles by which I could present my interpretation to the viewer as though he was looking at a life-sized car."
